21살의 아티스트 세일럼 일리스는 일평생 이 순간을 준비해 왔다. 샌프란시스코 외곽에서 태어나고 자란 싱어송라이터인 그녀는 자신이 기억하는 어린시절부터 음악을 만들어왔다. 일찍이 음악 수업을 들은 그는 자신의 음악성에 대한 공로를 첫 작곡 과외 선생님인 전설적 작곡가 보니 헤이즈(Bonnie Hayes)에게 돌린다. 셰어(Cher), 보니 래이트(Bonnie Raitt), 데이빗 크로스비(David Crosby)의 노래를 작곡한 보니 헤이즈는 12살의 세일럼이 지닌 스토리텔링 재능을 즉각적으로 알아봤다. “그녀가 없었더라면 저는 여기 없었을 거에요.” 보니 헤이즈가 버클리 음대의 송라이팅 학부 학장으로 지명되었을 때 세일럼은 그를 따라가야한다는 것을 알아차렸다. 수년간의 집중적인 학습 이후 세일럼은 경력의 다음 장을 마련하기 위해 로스엔젤레스로 이주한다.
2020년 8월 세일럼 일리스는 10K Projects/Homemade Projects의 눈에 들어 레코드 계약을 하게 된다. 얼마 지나지 않아 그녀의 히트작 ‘Mad At Disney’는 바이럴을 타며 스포티파이 2억 8백만 회의 스트림을 기록했고, 320만개 이상의 틱톡 비디오가 제작되었으며, 스포티파이 오늘의 최다 재생목록(Today's Top Hits)에 15주 동안 머물렀다. 이후 2020년 11월 ‘Coke & Mentos’를 발매, 제인 로우(Zane Lowe)의 애플 뮤직 쇼에서 첫 선을 보였고, 올해 EP 앨범 ‘(L)only Child’를 발매했다. 본인의 작품 외에도 알렌 워커(Alan Walker), 제이미 밀러(Jamie Miller), 서페이시스(Surfaces) 등과 협업을 진행했다. 또한 투모로우바이투게더(TXT)의 ‘Anti-Romantic’과 벨라 포치(Bella Poarch)의 2021년 히트곡 ‘Build A Bitch’를 포함한 곡을 공동 작곡했다. 최근 TXT, 알렌 워커와 작업한 싱글 ‘PS5’와 싱글로 발매 후 큰 인기를 끌었던 ‘Hey Siri’, ‘Ben & Jerry’가 담긴 EP 앨범을 발매한 세일럼은 라이징 스타의 지위를 확고히 하고 있다.
21-year-old pop artist Salem Ilese has been preparing for this moment her entire life. Born and raised outside San Francisco, the singer/songwriter has been doing music for as long as she can remember. Placed in music lessons from an early age, she attributes her musicality to legendary writer Bonnie Hayes, her first songwriting teacher. Credited for writing songs for Cher, Bonnie Raitt, David Crosby, Bette Midler and more, Hayes immediately saw then-12-year-old Salem’s gift for storytelling; “she took me under her wing. I probably wouldn’t be here without her.” When Hayes moved to Boston to head Berklee College of Music’s songwriting department, Salem knew she had to follow and enrolled. After a couple years of intense learning, Salem made the decision to move to Los Angeles to kickstart the next chapter of her career.
In August 2020, Salem Ilese caught the eye of 10K Projects/Homemade Projects and signed a record deal. Shortly after, her breakout hit “Mad At Disney” gained viral momentum with over 208M Spotify streams and the creation of over 3.2M TikTok videos, all while holding placement on Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits playlist for over 15 weeks. From there she went on to release “Coke & Mentos” in November of 2020, premiering the track on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music show, followed by the release of her EP (L)onely Child this year. Beyond her own music, Salem also collaborated with Alan Walker, Jamie Miller, Surfaces, and more, while also co-writing songs including TXT’s “Anti-Romantic” and Bella Poarch’s 2021 hit “Build A Bitch.” Cementing rising star status, Salem now looks forward to her EP Unsponsored Content, lead by upcoming single “PS5” with TXT and Alan Walker and featuring previous songs “Hey Siri” and “Ben & Jerry.
